Vision Board: 2021

You might remember that last year I gave up on New Years Resoltions and set out to, instead, create a vision board.

If you don’t remember, or you missed it all together, here is the link to that article where you will find details about why I chose a vision board versus resolutions, how vision boards work (it’s science!), and ideas for getting started.

As 2020 draws nearer to a close, I’ve been reflecting over my vision board for the past year…created without any pandemic in mind…and am finding A LOT of what I envisioned for how I wanted to be, feel and accomplish still holds true for 2021.

Instead of “failure”, I’m dubbing it a work in progress.

(How’s that for a re-frame?)

And I’ll be creating my 2021 board with a lot of the same visions in mind.

But here’s what I’ll be doing a little differently:

Focus Word

I’ve been in prayer about a focus word for the upcoming year. A word that ties together so many of my visions, in all the various areas, for 2021.

A word that sort of sums it up…and here’s why:

I want to carry that word with me wherever I go so I can keep my vision board top of mind, even when it’s not right in front of me.

Wellness

So much of how we desire to feel (i.e joy, contentment, peace, hope, etc.) and things we hope to do/accomplish hinges on wellness, whether we recognize it or not.

Wellness extends much further than physical well-being.

As such, we must be mindful of all dimensions of wellness in order to achieve a state of wellness that is well rounded and whole.

The Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) identifies the following dimensions of wellness essential for recovery from mental health and substance abuse issues
(note: this does not mean that you have to have a substance use or diagnosed mental health issue for assessment of health in these areas – and associated moves to action – to be beneficial for you)

Eight Dimensions of Wellness:

  1. Physical
  2. Mental
  3. Emotional
  4. Intellectual
  5. Social
  6. Spiritual
  7. Occupational
  8. Environmental

As you spend time brainstorming ideas for your 2021 vision board, consider each of these areas and make note of anything you need to do/change in the upcoming year to achieve overall wellness.

There is a golden thread connecting each of these eight dimensions, so neglecting some areas while only nurturing others can lead to falling short.

.

I’ve already started brainstorming ideas for my 2021 board and gathering pictures, quotes, etc. that represent these visions.

I also created a private facebook group for those of you who might want to join me – and others – on this vision board journey.

Just a safe place to share, and give/receive support and accountability through the year.

Love this. Thanks for pointing out that wellness consists of EIGHT areas. As a physical therapist, it’s easy for me to recognize the value of physical wellness. After living in a pandemic for 9 months, I now see how much my social wellness has been compromised. I really need to consider all aspects though as I continue to solidly what my vision for 2021 looks like. What a good read — Happy New Year to you and the fam!

It’s easy to get caught up on an area or two, neglecting the others. I like to think of this as a wheel with each “area” a spoke. Without all eight, the wheel will be misshapen and the ride bumpy!
Thanks for dropping by and for your comment, Kristin. Blessings to you and your family through 2021!
